Miss Augusta Scholarship Pageant
An Official Preliminary to the Miss Georgia and Miss America Pageants
Miss Augusta Pageant History
Prior to 1963, the Miss Augusta Pageant was held in conjunction with the Miss Golf Pageant, with local beauties having the opportunity to compete for both titles. Special guests during this time included Miss America 1960, Lynda Lee Mead, and Miss Universe 1961, Marlene Schmidt from Germany.
In 1963, the Miss Augusta Pageant was separated from the Miss Golf Pageant. The Augusta Jaycees then sponsored the pageant, now held in August rather than April. This arrangement continued through 1970, when the pageant was discontinued as a project of the Jaycees.
Four years later, under the leadership of Jim Sykes, the Augusta Jaycees revived the pageant. Since then, the pageant has found its place in the community, and many young ladies have benefited from the scholarships, which are in excess of $80,000 to date.
The Miss Augusta Pageant is fast becoming one of the best in Georgia. Each year it is well attended by members of the Miss Georgia Pageant Corporation and officials of other local franchised pageants from Georgia and South Carolina.
In 1964, Vivian Davis (Miss Augusta 1964) was named Miss Georgia. Others receiving honors at the Miss Georgia Pageant include:
